The good life

"They reeled and staggered like drunkards; they were at their wits’ end. Then they cried out to the Lord in their trouble, and he brought them out of their distress. He stilled the storm to a whisper; the waves of the sea were hushed. They were glad when it grew calm, and he guided them to their desired haven. Let them give thanks to the Lord for his unfailing love and his wonderful deeds for mankind." Psalm 107:27-31

Sometimes I go through days where everything works out and I feel like I’m living the good life! The sun shines brightly, people are nice, I feel happy and life is just wonderful! But inevitably, idyllic moments like these are interrupted by challenges. Soon I’m faced with opportunities to work through things, seek the truth, make wrong things right, and trust God even when I cannot see my way through.

Often, a knee-jerk reaction to a problem is to try and fix it. When we get upset and immediately try to fix the situation, we can actually make the situation worse. It takes courage to trust God and wait to see His way through the difficulty. By grasping for control now we lose courage and begin to reel in the storm. It’s only when we give up on fixing things that we begin to see the storm from God’s perspective and gain His strength. As we learn to trust Him, peace enters our heart.

As we abide in Him, we begin to see His answers to our prayers. It’s not always as we would have hoped or imagined, but we can rest assured that God will eventually show us the bigger picture.“If you remain in me and my words remain in you, ask whatever you wish and it will be given to you.” John 15:7

Prayer works. Don’t give up. God has given you the authority to pray and experience triumph in Christ. The good life begins with prayers of trust and surrender.

Lord, I pray that You would give me eyes to see my difficulties the way that You do. Help me to trust You when the waves are high around me. Even though You permit the waves, You will give me the courage I need to endure until You ultimately calm the sea. I choose to trust You today. In Your precious name, amen.
